Find a Friend Who… Students walk around asking questions related to classroom expectations, school vocabulary, or any previously learned vocabulary. The vocabulary you choose should depend on your students’ English proficiency and grade level. This simple, but fun activity is great for reviewing vocabulary, practicing asking and answering questions, and getting students moving. This activity can be extended by adding math, for example by graphing responses, analyzing data, and writing about the results. There are so many ways to build on this activity! Provide short passages and guide students to identify the main idea, key details, and supporting evidence. Think-alouds are especially helpful for MLs because they allow teachers to model how strong readers make sense of a text. Asking students to explain their thinking helps deepen their understanding. Argument Balance Scale The Argument Balance Scale strategy is from the book "Academic Conversations" by Jeff Zwiers and Sara L. Hamerla. It is one of my favorite speaking activities because it gets students talking and using discourse. You can modify it to use with all levels of MLs. However, I would use it more with levels 2s and up to work on elaborating and explaining ideas with supporting details. This activity can be use with any topics, social and academic.
