As ELD teachers, we know that language development is only one piece of helping our multilingual learners succeed. Many of our students are learning a new language while also adjusting to a new school, a new culture, and sometimes even a new country. Some of them might have experienced trauma while moving to the country. Creating a classroom environment where they feel safe, valued, and supported is just as important as teaching vocabulary and social and academic language.

Incorporating social-emotional learning (SEL) into your teaching space can help students identify and express their emotions, build positive relationships, develop confidence, and feel a stronger sense of belonging. Even small additions, like a feelings chart, calming corner, affirmation station, or visual supports can make a big difference in helping students feel comfortable and ready to learn.

Whether you have a dedicated classroom, a shared space, or a teaching cart, there are simple ways to incorporate SEL into your teaching environment.
